Hand Sewing: Crazy Quilt Sampler

  • MAKEbhm 4000 3rd Avenue South Birmingham, AL, 35222 United States (map)

Thursdays, April 17 - May 8, 6 - 8pm

When you think of a traditional, “fancy” quilt with velvet and other rich fabrics, hand-embroidered top stitching and pieces connected with little rhyme or reason, you’re generally thinking of a “crazy quilt”. Our predecessors were quite fond of reuse. Textiles were expensive and scraps still had purpose. In this class, you will learn two methods for assembling a crazy quilt block by hand, as well as embellishment techniques with ribbon, trim, and embroidery. Required skills: familiarity with hand-sewing (running stitch, backstitch, whip stitch).

Basic supplies will be provided but the best part of a crazy quilt is recognizing the scraps of fabric that originated from favorite clothes, other projects, etc. We encourage you to bring fabric (upholstery samples and heavier fabrics welcome!), notions, trims, ribbons, patches, etc. Class will yield one finished crazy quilt sampler (approximately 12”x12”) as well as additional samples.
